map art – pt. 2

A few weeks ago I shared a sneak peak of a project I started using the jigsaw, a few pieces of scrap wood, and some map stencils. It looked a little something like this:

Now I’m back to share the final product! I was torn about what to do with the continents. Should I paint them, stain them, cover them with fabric or scrapbook paper, write on them, or what? I fell in love with the design of the wood grain on each piece and decided to stain them so the wood grain could still be the shining star. I used Minwax’s Special Walnut stain, which I had left over from another project. Also, I decided to paint the edges yellow – the same yellow on the wall in the guest bedroom where this piece of art would reside. The color is actually Concord Ivory by Benjamin Moore. You can see the small sample jar in the picture below that I had from back when I was testing out paint colors for the walls. And this was more than enough to paint the edges of the continents! [Yeah, I was too lazy to open the real can of paint that had some leftover from the guest bedroom project.]

Step 1: Paint two coats on the edges of each piece.

Step 2: After paint is completely dry, brush stain on top surface. Wipe off excess stain until wood becomes the desired color. Note: Having the edges painted prevents stain from absorbing into the wood along the edges. Use a cloth to wipe off any stain that runs onto the edges from the top surface.

Step 3: Let it all dry overnight!

I was inspired by this beautiful artwork made by a friend for baby Clara’s room. And I thought the map would look awesome with Bible verses as the background. After a little modge podge, wood glue, and drying time, I was admiring my map project on the shelf in the guest bedroom.

From the side view you can see how the yellow sides are a nice accent against the dark wood stain and coordinates with the wall color! Also, I just love the color, obviously. I mean I did paint a whole room with it.

Here is a little close up of one of the verses I wanted to focus on with these piece. Psalm 113:4 – “The Lord is exalted over all the nations, His glory above the heavens.”

Oh, and so you can have an idea of where this actually is, here’s part of the guest bedroom (ignore the strange lighting on the wall from the window and blinds. The two frames on the bottom shelf are old frames I had sitting in the closet and are filler for now – still deciding on what pictures I want to put there.

Some more DIY artwork is in the making now – to be hung over the dresser. I’ll give you a hint: its not woodworking but it may have a little something to do with toilet paper.
